Our Story

Stone Bridge Baptist Church started with a thanksgiving story. May glory and praise be to God! In the middle of November 2003, God put a vision in a group of Christians – forming a church in one of the fast growing areas in Canada - Markham. They also found a public school - Stonebridge Public School which can be rented at the heart of the new growing area. After prayer, they responded to God's calling. They had a passion for the community and would like to share the good news about Jesus Christ with them. Afterwards they had a faith pledge with CDN $7,200.00 among themselves. Amazingly, it was just the exact amount that they planned to have for the set up fee for the church. They clapped their hands and gave thanks to God for His provision.

The name of the church was also very special. Both the street and the public school rented are called Stonebridge. Stone Bridge has two special spiritual meanings: Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of this church (Eph. 2:20) and He is the bridge between God and Man (1 Tim. 2:5). It shows us that Jesus Christ is the foundation of this church. He is also the only one that can bridge between God and man.

At the end of Nov. 2003, a planning committee for establishing SBBC was formed. Before the end of December 2003, they planned the ministries for the church, accomplished the registration for SBBC as a non-profit charitable organization, set up bank account, and arranged rental with the York Region District School Board. Besides they also set up mailbox, phone line and web site. Church equipment were made or purchased such as audio-video equipment, computer, storage cabinet, offering bags, and Holy Communion utensils. All these could be accomplished within one and a half months and it was definitely a great experience of God’s grace and almighty power.

At the end of December, all members of the SBBC Planning Committee were transferred smoothly to the new SBBC Ministry Committee 2004. They served in the ministries of Worship, Evangelistic Outreach, Christian Education, Caring and Supportive.

In January 4, 2004, the first worship started on an extraordinarily warm and sunny Sunday during the coolest season in Canada with God's special care.
